Town & District Information

Mildenhall is a welcoming old Suffolk Market Town just off the A11 at the Barton Mills roundabout. The Market Cross was confirmed by Charter in 1412, and the surrounding Market Place buildings date from the late 16th Century. There is evidence of Stone Age and Bronze Age settlements locally.

Mildenhall became world famous when in 1942, probably the most beautiful silver objects to survive from Roman Britain were found. These 34 pieces of 4th Century Roman silver tableware are rated amongst the top ten treasure finds in Britain. The originals are now in the British Museum. Replicas of this hoard are housed in the Mildenhall Museum along with details of the find. The museum is open regularly throughout the Spring, Summer and Autumn, entry is free.

St Mary's church is one of the finest in West Suffolk with features dating back to 12th and 13th Centuries. The aisled ceiling has exquisitely carved hammer beams and the 112 feet tall square tower provides the opportunity to view the surrounding countryside, which includes the River Lark and its riverside walks.

Shopping is a pleasure amongst the traditionally fronted shops and at the bustling Friday market. Free parking is in the town centre, adjacent to the recently refurbished swimming pool and leisure centre.

Mildenhall is an ideal central base to stay if visiting other nearby historic towns such as Ely, Bury St Edmunds, Lavenham, Newmarket, and of course Cambridge. Thetford forest is a short drive or cycle ride to enjoy walks and wildlife. Lackford Lakes, part of the Suffolk Wildlife Trust has an excellent new visitor's centre and refurbished 'hides' and walks on the east side of the town back across the A11.

The Mildenhall and Lakenheath airbases are nearby for aviation enthusiasts, but far away enough not to disturb the town. There is a strong community with the US Airforce personnel and Mildenhall Town.

There are many pubs and a variety of restaurants in town, along the riverbank and in nearby villages, offering a wide range of food and welcoming hospitality for meals and a relaxing drink. A range of tourist accommodation is available in the town and in surrounding villages.
